Medics avoid Covid-19 Vaccination
The current rising safety concerns have seen a lot of health workers in the coastal region avoid the covid-19 vaccine. The vaccine has been reportedly dropped by some countries citing notable side effects.
The county had a target of vaccinating all the frontline healthworkers with a supply of 26,000 doses. The health unions have come out to give reasons of the rising safety concerns of the vaccine and lack of information among the health workers.
The counties include Taita Taveta, Mombasa and kwale. For instance, for the 9,000 doses supplied to Mombasa county, only 370 frontline healthworkers have been vaccinated. The union officials have complained of the issues found with the vaccine in other countries. Peter Maroko says, “Some countries have suspended the use of the vaccine over concerns about blood clots. The adverse effects of the vaccine have not been established fully, President Uhuru Kenyatta, Cabinet secretaries and other senior government officials should get the Covid jab publicly.” he said.
For the 1,500 doses recieved in Taita Taveta, only 100 health workers have been vaccinated. Lamu county recieved 1,500 doses while Kilifi recieved 4,500 doses. For both lamu and Kilifi, the vaccination drive is yet to be rolled out, according to the county commissioners.
