Thousands of traders and workers at Kiamaiko Slaughter House in Huruma are worried after the Nairobi County government ordered the closure of the famous slaughter house.
NEMA has for several years fought to have the slaughter house shifted on environment and sanitation grounds. They have however failed continuously to date.
Dandora area three MCA, Charles Thuo said that the slaughter house pauses a threat of disease outbreaks given the ever increasing number of traders and workers on the same limited space.
In April 2018, NEMA ordered the closure of Kiamaiko Slaughter House. They further gave a one year notice to the traders and workers to shift from the area. However, by April 2019, business at Kiamaiko was running as usual.
The slaughter house is famous for the supply of meat. Thousands of traders and workers who depend on Kiamaiko for a living shall be left jobless after the closure.
