Will Kenya go to War with Somalia? -Uhuru’s response to ICJ verdict
As of 12th October 2021, the ICJ ruled the maritime border dispute in favor of Somalia, which sparked and raised many questions. President Uhuru Kenyatta released a statement concerning the ICJ ruling. The President of Kenya rejected the ICJ ruling as most of us expected and is concerned about the Implications of our neighboring country, Somali, and the International Law in general. He also mentioned that the ICJ verdict had raised a lot of alarms and questions, as various international organizations such as the ICJ, are being used as a form of political tool in Africa.

He then went forward to mention that the ICJ court refused to use legal African Union frameworks to solve the dispute and border issues. President Uhuru Kenyatta mentioned that ICJ is biased and that is the main reason Kenya withdrew from the public hearings on March 14th, 2021. Kenya also withdrew again on September 24th. President Uhuru Kenyatta mentioned that he will not adhere to the ICJ rulings and instead will want the dispute solved by various African Union Institutions. He mentioned that Kenya and Somalia despite being neighboring countries and sharing various social, political, and economic cultures, the ICJ decision leaves him with no choice but to reverse economic, political, and social gains and also aggravate the security and peace situation in Somalia.
President Uhuru Kenyatta also mentioned that he had sworn that he will protect Kenya’s boundaries and territories as he become the President of Kenya back in 2013 and won’t stop. Despite his Presidential term ending in less than a year, he is still confident that the next President of Kenya will continue protecting our boundaries and territories. President Uhuru finished off by saying that Kenya is a sovereign nation and will continue protecting its geographical territory and boundary, especially at the maritime border despite the ICJ ruling.
